Come join The UBC Gilbert and Sullivan Society as the first Student Society to perform in the newly renovated Old Auditorium at UBC in Gilbert and Sullivan’s comic masterpiece, The H.M.S. Pinafore!
What Never?….
…. Well hardly ever
The words of Captain Corcoran aboard the H.M.S. Pinafore are appropriate! In this hazily mid century set production of Pinafore there are hardly ever any moments of clarity. Headmistress Hebe, cousin to Sir Joseph Porter, Admiral of the Queen’s Navee, brings a trial run of her girls school to a semester aboard the H.M.S. Pinafore where they will learn liberal arts and marine biology. Instead they get caught up in a forbidden romance between Josephine, the young daughter of the Captain and Ralph a foremast sailor. The complication is that Sir Joseph has accompanied the girls school in order to claim Josephine’s “promised” hand for himself and ensure the Captain and Josephine’s place in society. Add to that a group of sailors with a penchant for spontaneous anachronistic dance moves and a school of extremely eligible relatives even Side Show Bob would be astonished.
