Regarding the Christmas showcase, we decided to have another meeting on WEDNESDAY OCTOBER 19 at 7PM in SUB 207/209, given the poor turnout at last meeting. This meeting is MANDATORY for anyone who is interested in participating in the Christmas cabaret/showcase. If you are unable to make the meeting, please email me (Natasha - nazacher@gmail.com) with your ideas for a performance no later than WEDNESDAY OCTOBER 19. We need to start thinking about the program and organize some semblance of a rehearsal schedule.

Thank you to those who came out to our planning meeting on Monday!  Your enthusiasm is contagious, and we now have a fabulous performance opportunity coming up in the fall term, a Christmas cabaret/showcase called “I’ve Got Chills!” lead by three lovely ladies Natasha Zacher, Sydney McIvor and Vanessa Quarinto.

But of course, if we’re to have a show, we need PERFORMERS of all sorts, and that’s where you lot come in.  Below I’ve attached Natasha’s email to you guys, and it has all the information you need to get involved!  Please read it and reply to her at nazacher@gmail.com to express your interest.

Thank you to all of you who came out to our Musical Mashup evening last night.  We were overwhelmed and extremely touched by your enthusiasm, and we hope you had as good a time as we did!  It was so nice to meet all of you.

After hearing some of your exciting ideas for the club this year, we’ve decided to hold a (“How to Succeed:”) Planning Meeting on Monday 3 October at 7pm in Room 207/209 in the SUB.  We’re going to hash out some plans and see what we’ll be able to do this year.  Exciting, I know.

Even if you weren’t able to come to the Mashup night, please come, we’d love to meet you.  If you’re interested in planning things for next year, being a part of production teams, taking on a leadership role in the club, or joining the Exec, you should also try and make it out to the meeting.

1. First Event! Musical Mashup Mixer, Friday 30th September 6pm

Do you want to sing and dance in a no-stress environment with friends?  Are you a fan of GLEE?  Or would you just like to get a preview of or even help plan the amazing things we’ll get up to this year (we’d love to hear your ideas)?

NO EXPERIENCE NECESSARY. This event is FREE of charge and open to anyone who’d like to see what our club’s about.  Can’t sing or dance or want to just help out behind the scenes?  That’s okay!  This meeting is a chance for all of us to get to know each other, and have some fun while we’re at it.

Friday 30th September.  6pm. Book the date/time.

Location: the SUB (we’ll send off another email with a meeting place and room).

What we’re up to: Introductions and icebreakers, followed by a quick beginner workshop in which we attempt to make music with two popular songs from musicals (i.e. MASHUP!), then we’d love to chat and hear what YOU want to do with the club this year.  This will hopefully be the first of a series of workshops held by our Society.

Also a great place to meet future audition buddies, artistic teams, and like-minded people.  Just sayin’.

Now, in the limbo between the rehearsals of shows, we are presenting the UBC Gilbert and Sullivan Society’s Fifth Annual Musical Revue!  Our revues are a fun collection of the club’s favourite musical numbers as allocated to a common theme: this year, “Masquerade”.

Featuring numbers like “Facade” from Jekyll and Hyde, “Masquerade” from Phantom of the Opera, “Master of the House” from Les Miserables and others from the musicals Chorus Line, Spamalot, Chicago, Annie and Wicked among the multitude.

There is only a one-off performance, so be sure to visit the Student Union Building Ballroom at UBC on April 1st at 8:00PM to see it!  The admission fee is $5, paid in cash at the door. Come for the singing and dancing and general revelry.  Best of all?  Come in Costume.

We are all very excited, and we woul d love for you to be there!

The Gilbert and Sullivan Society presents Fiddler on the Roof!

Fiddler is to be performed at John Oliver Secondary School’s auditorium on the following dates:

7:30PM on Thursday, 04 Feburary
7:30PM on Friday, 05 Feburary
2:00PM and 7:30PM shows on Saturday, 06 Feburary

In addition to these shows, there is an open dress rehearsal on Wednesday, Feburary 03, to which any may come in to watch.  We gladly accept donations on this date.  John Oliver students in particular are most welcome!

John Oliver Secondary is located at 530 East. 41st Avenue.

Tickets will be sold at the door, and the price is $15 for students, and $20 for non-students.  Please be aware that we only accept cash.

In other news, UBC’s Imagine Day has come and gone, but there is still the AMS Clubs Week! The Gilbert and Sullivan Society of UBC will be manning a booth in the Student Union Building from the 21st through to the 25th during this, and any interested parties may sign up for an audition slot, obtain a membership or simply show up to listen to an enthusiastic representative to take notes of show dates as well as other social events one will be invited to with an invitation.

Please note the following audition schedule:

A general dance call will be held from 12pm to 3pm on Sunday, September 27th.  Individual auditions with an emphasis on vocal talent will take place on Monday, September 28th and September 29th, a Tuesday.  Callbacks will take place on Wednesday, September 30th. Please prepare two songs for these auditions.  If it is not possible for you to attend either audition date, there are a limited series of timeslots on Sunday prior to the dance call.

All auditions shall take place in the UBC Student Union Building (SUB) in the evening.

Should you choose to audition for Trial by Jury alone, it is recommended that you prepare 2 contrasting operetta or classical pieces.

If you are only auditioning for Fiddler on the Roof, please prepare 2 contrasting musical theatre pieces.

If you are auditioning for both shows, then it is strongly recommended you select and prepare one classical and one modern piece.  Take note that you will not in all likelihood be asked to perform both songs in their entirety.

An accompanist will be provided; please bring a clean copy of sheet music if you require their help.

Please indicate which show(s) you would like to audition for and whether or not you are currently a UBC student.  As an alternative, UBC’s annual “Club’s Week” runs from the 21st to the 25th of September this year, and our Society will be present for all five days.  Additional information regarding auditions may be obtained there, and it will also be possible to sign up for an audition timeslot at our booth.

We welcome new talent as well as returning faces!  Here’s to what looks to be a fantastic new season!

We are currently seeking artistic teams for the two productions.  As with previous years, auditions for both shows will be held in late September, and all interested parties may sign up for them during the new school year’s clubs week.  (Exact dates, along with more information, will be published shortly).
